Frequently Asked Questions

We know you have questions when considering a summer job at Kennybrook, so we’ve identified our most frequently asked questions and answers to help you.

What type of camp is Kennybook and where is it located?

We are a traditional, family-owned, residential summer camp for boys and girls who have completed grades 1st through 9th. We go beyond what is expected to encourage new experiences, increase skills and nurture individual interests.  At Kennybrook, kids can have fun, be themselves and enjoy being kids. We encourage camper choice and offer a structured, well-supervised program with a wide variety of athletic, creative and challenging activities. Each staff member is critical to our delivery of an experience that positively impacts campers. Located only 90 miles north of New York City in Sullivan County, NY, we have all the beauty and adventure of the Catskill Mountains right in our backyard.

What kind of positions are you hiring for?

Our staff team is made up of a combination of general counselors, specialists, support staff, and Senior Staff. The majority of our counselors are specialists, meaning they focus on teaching one activity area including the waterfront, athletics, creative arts, cooking, STEM, photography, performing arts, etc. If you are interested in working at Kennybrook, please fill out a staff application and we will be happy to discuss your background further to see what area will be the best fit.

When are counselors expected to be at camp?

All staff must attend orientation. Orientation begins around June 20th, but the exact date will be communicated with staff upon hiring. Staff who will be working at the waterfront and the challenge course will need to be at camp a few days prior to the start of orientation to secure certifications and prepare activity areas. All counselors and staff are required to stay at camp until the last day, which is approximately August 15th.

What are the staff accommodations?

Camp Kennybrook counselors live with campers in modern bunks, with separate bathrooms and showers. There’s a minimum of two staff in each cabin with renovated bathrooms, electricity, exhaust fans and plenty of space.

What about communication, free time and laundry?

Many areas of camp have wifi, including the staff lounge. TVs and DVDs are available as well as a fitness studio with machines and weights. We schedule staff games against other camps and staff activities at camp on Saturday nights. Staff laundry is done each week.

Where does the staff come from?

Camp Kennybrook attracts staff from all over the world. With about 50% of our staff from North America, we also have many staff members from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Russia, Poland and South Africa.

How many counselors and staff are at Camp Kennybrook?

We have about 100 staff members and about 300 campers. That team includes Directors, Senior Staff, Counselors, Administrative, Health and Support Staff. All senior staff are college graduates, and counselors have completed at least one year of college or have graduated from our own Counselor Assistant program.

How do days/nights off work, and where can I go?

Each counselor has six days off during the summer. Counselors have four to five nights off each week from approximately 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM. We facilitate transportation to and from town many nights per week and arrange for day off transportation multiple times over the course of the summer. Counselors enjoy visiting the Woodbury Commons Outlet Stores, Middletown for movies, shopping and food, Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame, Lake Superior, Woodstock, New York City, and the Delaware River for rafting and canoeing.

How are counselors paid and can I take advances?

Salaries are paid at the end of the summer, but staff may request advances twice during the summer, once in July and once in August.

What is Orientation?

Before camp starts, an interactive five-day orientation covers all aspects of camp, counselor responsibilities and performance expectations. Orientation is also a great opportunity to get to know the other staff and the campus. The workshops also focus on developing techniques to be successful in dealing with campers.

How are counselors expected to dress?

We are informal at Kennybrook and do not require staff to wear uniforms. However, staff members are expected to be good role models for campers in terms of hygiene, grooming and language. Staff shirts are required whenever staff accompany campers off campus, and for certain special events throughout the summer. Staff shirts will be provided to you upon your arrival at camp.
